SERGEANT FIRST CLASS MISCELLANY

In the U. S. Army, the Sergeant First class rank has replaced the Technical Sergeant rank and has been paid at various times as pay grade E-6 or E-7.

In 1920, six pay grades were established for enlisted soldiers who were not recruits. The chevrons would be worn point up and made of olive drab material on a background of dark blue. The Master Sergeant (First Pay Grade) wore three chevrons and three rockers. The Technical Sergeant (Second Pay Grade) wore three chevrons and two rockers. The First Sergeant (also Second Pay Grade) wore Technical Sergeant insignia with a lozenge (diamond) between the chevrons and rockers.

In 1942, the First Sergeant was moved from the Second Pay Grade to the First Pay Grade. The First Sergeant now wore Master Sergeant insignia with a lozenge (diamond) between the chevrons and rockers. The Technical Sergeant remained in the Second Pay Grade. Insignia were khaki on dark blue cotton backgrounds or olive drab on dark blue wool backgrounds.

In 1948, Recruit was added as the 7th Pay Grade, and insignia colors changed again. Combat personnel wore dark blue devices on gold backgrounds. Non-combat personnel wore dark gold color devices on dark blue backgrounds.

In 1951, the pay grades were reversed with Master Sergeant changing from First Pay Grade to pay grade E-7. Rank insignia were again olive drab on dark blue backgrounds.

In 1955, a new grade structure was implemented. Master Sergeants and First Sergeants were pay grade E-7.The Sergeant First Class was in pay grade E-6, with Sergeants in pay grade E-5. The color of rank insignia changed again – gold insignia on Army Green backgrounds for Service Dress and gold insignia on Army Blue backgrounds for Dress Blue Uniforms.

In 1958, pay grades E-8 and E-9 were added and titles were restructured. The Sergeant Major was pay grade E-9, the First Sergeant and the Master Sergeant were pay grade E-8, the Sergeant First Class or Platoon Sergeant moved up to pay grade E-7, and the Staff Sergeant filled the E-6 pay grade.

In 1967, dark metal pins were authorized for wear on field uniforms.

In 1975, shiny brass rank pins were authorized for overcoats, raincoats, and windbreakers.

In 1981, the Chief of Staff approved shoulder marks for enlisted personnel in the grade of corporal and higher. The shoulder marks were yellow embroidered devices on a black cloth slider for wear on the green shirts and black sweaters.
